On April 21, 1836, some 800 volunteers under the command of Sam Houston attacked the 1,500 man army of Mexican President Santa Anna and in 20 minutes won Texas independence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.smugmug.com\/Battleship-Texas\/n-D84zkj\/i-JNSVN3N\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/i-JNSVN3N-L-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"973\" height=\"645\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\">The San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site is unlike most Texas parks since it commemorates two <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetravellingfool.com\/thessaloniki-greece-old-world-charm-modern-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">historic sites<\/a> and also has a 3 \u00bd mile nature trail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.smugmug.com\/Battleship-Texas\/n-D84zkj\/i-KCSZLQR\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/i-KCSZLQR-L-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"965\" height=\"522\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\">The San Jacinto Monument rises 570 feet above the battleground and sits adjacent to the site where the Mexican Army encampment was located. The monument was built to commemorate the centennial of the battle and is the largest masonry structure in the world.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\">Inside the monument on the first floor is a free exhibit with artifacts belonging to many of the men who fought at the battle and other Texas historical figures. There is also a paid exhibit you can access detailing the war between the US and Mexico.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div data-gyg-href=\"https:\/\/widget.getyourguide.com\/default\/activities.frame\" data-gyg-locale-code=\"en-US\" data-gyg-widget=\"activities\" data-gyg-number-of-items=\"3\" data-gyg-partner-id=\"NJLOM2G\" data-gyg-q=\"houston\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.smugmug.com\/Battleship-Texas\/n-D84zkj\/i-6KpNKn3\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/i-6KpNKn3-L-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"928\" height=\"514\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\">You can pay $4.00 to take the elevator to the observation deck which honestly is not really worth the money. The observation deck is a very small enclosed space that has six or seven windows to look out over the area. Unless you just want to get an aerial view of the battleground, park and surrounding area you might want to skip the elevator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.smugmug.com\/Battleship-Texas\/n-D84zkj\/i-w4sRG6V\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/i-w4sRG6V-L-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"950\" height=\"630\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\">There is a documentary movie and also a gift shop located on the first floor of the monument.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.smugmug.com\/Battleship-Texas\/n-D84zkj\/i-7hM5knF\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/i-7hM5knF-L-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"643\" height=\"969\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\">The marsh trail nature walk takes you along the tidal marsh where you can observe alligators and migratory birds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.smugmug.com\/Battleship-Texas\/n-D84zkj\/i-V4WHCGw\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/i-V4WHCGw-L-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"656\" height=\"989\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\">Park road 1836 winds around the park and you will find various markers showing where the encampments were located, the battery placements and various locations of skirmishes leading up to the final battle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.smugmug.com\/Battleship-Texas\/n-D84zkj\/i-bcg5C8q\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/i-bcg5C8q-L-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"652\" height=\"983\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\">The site of the Texan encampment holds a cemetery where some of the participants of the battle and their decedents were buried in later years. Located at the Texan encampment there is also areas for picnics and it is also the home of the <a href=\"http:\/\/tpwd.texas.gov\/state-parks\/battleship-texas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Battleship Texas.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.smugmug.com\/Battleship-Texas\/n-D84zkj\/i-SnrZrJH\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/i-SnrZrJH-L-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"986\" height=\"657\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\">The Battleship Texas is the only surviving ship to have seen action in both World Wars. While small compared to today\u2019s mighty warships, when it was commissioned in 1914 the Texas was the the most powerful weapon in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.smugmug.com\/Battleship-Texas\/n-D84zkj\/i-VvcxQ9s\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/i-VvcxQ9s-L-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"980\" height=\"649\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\">During WWI the Texas participated with the American Squadron, patrolling the North Sea against German warship threats and after the war sailed with the \u201cGrand Fleet\u201d escorting the German fleet to Scotland for surrender.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.smugmug.com\/Battleship-Texas\/n-D84zkj\/i-X6vqCzh\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/i-X6vqCzh-L-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"813\" height=\"1229\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\">After the war the Texas underwent major modifications and saw action in the Pacific during WWII.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.smugmug.com\/Battleship-Texas\/n-D84zkj\/i-TLrzqTh\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/i-TLrzqTh-L-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"978\" height=\"648\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\">In 1945 the Texas had a crew of 1,464 Sailors, 80 Marines and 101 Officers. As far as weapons the Texas had a wide arsenal. The main battery consisted of ten 14 inch\/45 caliber guns in 5 turrets with a range of 13 miles that could fire 1,500 lb armor piercing shells. In addition the ship had six 5 inch\/51 caliber guns as a secondary battery and the anti aircraft weapons consisted of ten 3 inch\/50 caliber guns, ten 40 mm four-gun quad mounts and forty-four 20 mm guns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.smugmug.com\/Battleship-Texas\/n-D84zkj\/i-F7MLGSN\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/i-F7MLGSN-L-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"987\" height=\"654\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\">The Texas supported the landings at Iwo Jima firing over 900 rounds from her main battery. In April 1945 the Texas took part in the invasion of Okinawa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.smugmug.com\/Battleship-Texas\/n-D84zkj\/i-Xs8zcCL\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/i-Xs8zcCL-L-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"988\" height=\"654\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\">For six weeks the Texas fired 2,019 rounds of 14 inch ammunition at the enemy and at the end of the battle remained untouched by enemy guns and kamikaze attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.smugmug.com\/Battleship-Texas\/n-D84zkj\/i-7nGmJcg\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/i-7nGmJcg-L-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"993\" height=\"658\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">At the end of the war the Texas carried Japanese POW\u2019s from<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetravellingfool.com\/a-visit-to-the-palawan-military-museum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Philippines<\/a> to Hawaii and made three \u201cmagic carpet\u201d trips bringing nearly 5,000 troops home from the Pacific.<\/span><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.smugmug.com\/Battleship-Texas\/n-D84zkj\/i-Q75TSws\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/i-Q75TSws-L-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"993\" height=\"658\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\">The ship was retired in 1946 and in 1948 was slated to be used as a bombing target. The citizens of Texas launched a statewide campaign to raise funds and saved her from the scrap heap.<\/span><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" id=\"yui_3_8_0_1_1459176820043_2059\" class=\"sm-lightbox-image aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thetravellingfool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/i-CT59tX6-X2-1.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0037_HDR\" width=\"772\" height=\"1165\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\">On April 21, 1948 the Texas was towed to the San Jacinto Battleground and in for 35 years was administered by the Battleship Texas Commission. Designated a National Historic Engineering Landmark in 1975 and a National Historic Landmark in 1977 the ship became part of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in 1983.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/tpwd.texas.gov\/state-parks\/san-jacinto-battleground\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Jacinto Monument<\/a> and Battleground is located at 3523 Independence Parkway South<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 20px;\">La Porte, TX 77571 and is open daily from 9 am to 6 pm except for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, admission is free. The observation floor is open from 9 am to 5:30 pm.
